In a festive ALMA Spring Mixer, five students from the Arizona State University and the University of Arizona each received $1,000 scholarships from ALMA to continue pursuing their journalism careers.

The Jan. 19 event, hosted in the beautiful lobby of Univision Arizona, brought together working media professionals, students and guests, to celebrate the students and give working professionals a chance to socialize with colleagues and peers.

The scholarship recipients were chosen based on academic and extracurricular accomplishments as determined by an ALMA scholarship committee.

ALMA has been awarding scholarships, internships, conference registrations, and professional development travel grants throughout its 27-year history.

Three scholarship winners were from the University of Arizona and two from Arizona State University.

They are: Daniela Cazares, University of Arizona; Lexus Matos, Arizona State University; Isabela Gamez, University of Arizona; Nicole Macias Garibay, Arizona State University; and Susan Barnett, University of Arizona.

The mixer drew more than 70 people, including family members of scholarship recipients. One family drove from Juarez, Mexico, to be there as their daughter received the scholarship award.

The mixer also featured a charity raffle. Items won included tickets to a Phoenix Suns game, an Arizona Diamondbacks game, a Pepe Aguilar concert and a foursome to play at the Raven Golf Club.
